FOUNDATION STAGE Curriculum at WIS

About EYFS

At GEMS Wellington International School, the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) framework underpins our commitment to nurturing the whole child and igniting a lifelong love of learning. We provide a vibrant, supportive environment where every child feels safe, valued and inspired to thrive.

Our Foundation Stage promotes active learning through imaginative play, creativity and hands-on experiences that spark curiosity and challenge children to think critically, take risks and solve problems. We believe learning should be joyful, meaningful and engaging - indoors and out.

Through carefully planned opportunities, our dedicated educators foster exploration, independence and resilience while celebrating each child’s unique interests and strengths. Outdoor learning and enrichment are at the heart of our approach, giving children space to investigate, collaborate and connect with the world around them.

At GEMS Wellington International School, we prioritise the development of confident, curious and capable learners. We empower our youngest students to embrace challenge, express themselves and develop the social and emotional skills needed to flourish - laying strong foundations for future success.

Explore our Early Years Curriculum

The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) is a holistic framework that supports the learning and well-being of children from birth to five. It includes seven closely linked areas of learning, divided into prime and specific areas, designed to support all aspects of a child’s early development.

  • Personal, Social & Emotional Development

Personal, Social and Emotional Development supports children in building confidence, forming positive relationships and managing emotions. Through play, routines and interactions, children learn empathy, resilience and how to work with others.

  • Communication & Language

Communication and Language develops children’s speaking, listening and understanding through stories, role play and conversation. These experiences build confidence, vocabulary and social skills essential for learning and expressing ideas clearly.

  • Physical Development

Physical Development focuses on the development of both fine and gross motor skills. Through climbing, mark-making and using tools, children build strength, coordination and control for active, healthy lives.

  • Literacy

Literacy focuses on developing early reading and writing skills. Through stories, rhymes, mark-making and phonics, children build vocabulary, comprehension and a love of books that supports lifelong learning.

  • Mathematics

Mathematics develops children’s understanding of numbers, shapes, patterns and measures. Through practical activities, play and problem-solving, children build early numeracy skills.

  • Understanding the World

Understanding the World encourages children to explore people, places and the environment. Through hands-on experiences and real-life activities, they make sense of the world, developing curiosity, knowledge and respect for diversity.

  • Expressive Arts & Design

Expressive Arts and Design nurtures creativity through music, movement, role play and art. Children explore materials, express ideas and use their imagination, developing confidence through creative experiences.
