Beyond the Curriculum
Beyond the Curriculum (BtC) is a vital part of life at GEMS Wellington International School (WIS) and runs across the whole school, from Foundation Stage through to Sixth Form. It reflects our belief that some of the most meaningful learning happens beyond the classroom. Through a wide range of activities and initiatives during lunchtimes and after school, students are encouraged to explore new interests, take on new challenges and become fully involved in the life of the school.
BtC allows students to discover what they enjoy, develop their strengths and build confidence in new environments. Whether working with students from different year groups, leading ideas of their own or trying something for the first time, these experiences help young people grow as independent learners. They also support the development of the values that sit at the heart of our school community, encouraging students to show empathy, act with integrity and demonstrate fortitude as they learn, collaborate and challenge themselves.
Alongside these opportunities, our WISDOM sessions provide targeted academic support for students studying GCSE, A Level and IB programmes. These sessions offer focused guidance to help students strengthen their understanding, revisit key concepts and achieve their personal best. Students are invited to attend based on their individual progress, ensuring the support they receive is purposeful and tailored to their learning needs.
Beyond the Curriculum. Nurturing knowledge, inspiring curiosity and building character.
Sports BtC
At WIS, the Wildcats Sport BTC programme is underpinned by the core values of fortitude, integrity, and empathy. Through participation, leadership, and teamwork, students learn resilience, responsibility, and respect for others. Wildcats grow not only as athletes but as members of a community, learning to play with purpose, embody the school’s values, and, as always, to play as one
As part of our BtC provision, students have the opportunity to represent an extensive range of squads, including, but not limited to: basketball, football, netball, swimming, rugby, athletics, tennis, gymnastics and cricket. These squads are open for students from Year 3 to 13, and allow them to compete against other schools in Dubai in the DASSA leagues, as well as several national and international competitions.
All of our students are part of the WIS Wildcats team. Regardless if students play for a team, students can get involved with our BtC Sport provision by joining the Wildcats Media Team, by taking on a leadership role as one of our Sports Captains, or by taking part in our challenges and competitions released each term.
In addition to our own provisions, we also have strong club links with a wide range of established high-performance clubs and academies across Dubai and internationally, which allow students to further develop their sporting talents outside of school.
Performing Arts
At WIS, our Performing Arts programme offers students the opportunity to engage in Drama, Dance, Music, and Musical Theatre through a wide range of inclusive and dynamic experiences. From choirs and instrumental groups to dance and musical theatre classes, there is something for everyone with no prior experience required.
Students perform regularly throughout the year in curriculum showcases, workshops, informal events, and large-scale productions, including two full musicals and one play annually. These experiences ensure every student has the chance to develop confidence, creativity, and a love for performance.
We also offer leadership opportunities through our Performing Arts Ambassadors and Scholars, alongside participation in prestigious events such as ChoirFest, GPAA Dance Competitions, and regional music competitions.
Through partnerships with leading industry organisations including Urdang, West End Stage, and Shakespeare & Co, students gain valuable insight into the professional world of performing arts.
Worldwide Initiatives
Our links with TEDx, Model United Nations, Harvard Project Zero, and the World Scholars’ Cup provide the links to global interests, initiatives and projects. Over 100 students are successfully taking part in our Duke of Edinburgh Award scheme from Bronze to Gold level developing the communication, leadership and service skills necessary to support both university and career aspirations.
30 x 30 Initiative
The Dubai Fitness Challenge is an awesome initiative that is run across the whole of Dubai to encourage the nation to complete 30 minutes of exercise every day for a month in an effort to highlight the importance of daily physical activity as part of our everyday routine. Now more than ever it is vital that students, parents and teachers are staying active, and it is always great to see the whole community come together to complete 30 minutes of exercise for 30 days. This year was no different, with a whole school launch and finale events, a dedicated 30x30 website with daily, weekly and monthly challenges for the whole community to get involved in, as well as a week of Dubai 30x30 Inter-House challenges within PE lessons.
Our talented ex-student, Mustafa Syed, produced this fantastic video of our Sports Leaders taking part in the Dubai Fitness Challenge in the desert as part of the Dubai 30x30 initiative, when he was in Year 11.
