At GEMS Wellington International School, we welcome students with a variety of academic backgrounds and abilities. The Achievement Centre team works closely with parents, students and teachers to identify and cater for a range of additional needs, whether to address challenges facing children or to extend the more able.
A variety of formal and informal assessments are used and learning profiles are developed to highlight any additional educational requirements for students. An Individual Educational Plan (IEP) is prepared for students who are allocated an ‘Additionally Resourced’ placement. Such placements are limited in number across the school and are intended for those students whose additional needs cannot be met within usual provision.
The overall purpose of the Achievement Centre is to enable students to access the broad curriculum while maintaining their confidence and self-esteem. It is acknowledged that early intervention and short-term ‘booster’ support can often prove successful in ensuring that a child fulfils his/her potential. The Achievement Centre’s support varies accordingly, addressing both short-term and on-going needs e.g. in-class support, small group sessions and, when appropriate, 1:1 support.
